Technics Career – Aleksandra Sexton

Aleksandra joined Technics in January 2025 as a project manager in our Wakefield office. We recently discussed her experience to date and her future aspirations.

Firstly, Aleksandra, it’s been a pleasure working with you. Tell us, what has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned during your first six months with us?
Coming into the Geospatial industry, I was a total newbie, and what surprised me most was how much is happening underground that we never think about. Walking down the street now, I can’t help but wonder what’s beneath my feet. It’s eye-opening to realise how much critical infrastructure is hidden just below the surface!

Can you share a project or moment you’re particularly proud of so far?
There was one unforgettable Friday, just a few weeks in, where everything that could go wrong—did. But instead of panicking, I stayed calm, focused, and worked through each challenge one by one. By the end of the day, we had solutions in place. It may have been a late finish, but the sense of accomplishment was worth it!

How did you approach building relationships with your team and stakeholders?
I’ve really enjoyed getting to know my team and stakeholders. I asked a lot of questions—not just about work, but about them as people. I genuinely believe laughter is one of the best icebreakers, and I try to bring a bit of humour to every conversation. It helps build real, lasting connections.

What strategies helped you stay organised and on top of your projects?
I’m a big fan of lists—there’s nothing quite like ticking off tasks! And my Outlook calendar is practically my co-pilot. In such a fast-paced environment, being organised isn’t optional—it’s essential. Otherwise, you end up chasing your own tail.

What are you most looking forward to as you continue to grow in your role?
I’m excited to spend more time out on-site, see our topographical and utility surveyors in action, and gain a deeper understanding of the fieldwork side. There’s so much more to learn, and I can’t wait to be right in the middle of it.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in a project management role?
If you enjoy a challenge and love problem-solving, go for it! No two days are ever the same, and while it can be intense, the satisfaction you get from overcoming hurdles and seeing a project come together is incredibly rewarding.
